Why did you join Toastmasters?
I joined Toastmasters out of guilt. As an English teacher, I had opportunities to teach speech writing and serve as a contest judge on several occasions, but I had never delivered a single speech. So, I joined Toastmasters to practice public speaking myself.
What changes have you noticed in yourself?
Well, obviously, I am a better speaker but, I’ve learned something more valuable, leadership. You know I am not a born leader; I was comfortable with being number two in an organization. But serving as a club officer, I learned a quite a lot about leadership and that led me to launch a new club. It’s a big challenge. We needed to recruit 20 members. I had to set goals, I had to make decisions, I had to motivate other people and through that whole experience, I learned quite a lot about leading people and I’m really, really grateful for the opportunity.
