Toastmasters International District 76 presents the 2017 Communication and Leadership Award to cell biologist Yoshinori Ohsumi in recognition of the following achievements:

 

Communication

Out of his deep concern about the current status of science in Japan, where scientists are increasingly experiencing difficulty in conducting research from a long-term perspective and in allocating sufficient time to focus on basic scientific research, Yoshinori Ohsumi has been consistently emphasizing the importance of basic science and raising questions about the tendency of modern society to pursue only efficiency and short-term achievements. He may not be the most eloquent of speakers, but from him we have been able to learn that communication is not merely about speaking fluently but steadfastly remaining true to one’s convictions and thereby moving and inspiring others.

 

Leadership

Yoshinori Ohsumi has transformed his beliefs into action. He has played a leading role in launching the Ohsumi Yoshinori Kinen Kikin Fund^*1 by donating 100 million yen with the aim of supporting the development of talented individuals who will shape the future of Japan and young scientists in the field of basic science, which requires a long-term perspective. More recently, he has also established the Ohsumi Frontier Science Foundation^*2 by again donating 100 million yen to financially support unique and farsighted research; help scientists, citizens and companies build networks, and contribute to the development of scientific bases in Japan. We have concluded that his energy to put his beliefs into action and the selflessness with which he has committed his own funds to his cause will serve as a shining example for those who aspire to become leaders in their field.

トーストマスターズインターナショナル・ディストリクト76は、2017年度のコミュニケーション＆リーダーシップ賞の受賞者を細胞生物学者の大隅良典さんに決定しました。

 

授賞理由：

＜コミュニケーション＞

大隅良典さんは、「長期的な展望で研究するのがむずかしい」「基礎研究にじっくり取り組むことができない」現在の日本における科学の現状を憂い、基礎科学の重要性を一貫して訴えてこられました。これは、効率重視、短期間での成果を求めがちな現代社会に一石を投じるものとなっています。決して雄弁な方ではありませんが、コミュニケーションとは、立て板に水のように語ることではなく、信念を訴え貫く強さであり、それによって人々に感動を与えることである、インスピレーションを与えることであると、私たちは学ぶことができました。

 

＜リーダーシップ＞

上記の信念を実行に移し、1億円もの寄付を行い、将来の日本を支える優秀な人材の育成、長期的な視点が必要な基礎研究分野における若手研究者等の育成を目的として「大隅良典記念基金」^*1の設立に貢献されました。また、最近では、やはり1億円もの資金を拠出し、先見性・独創性に優れた研究を助成するとともに、研究者、市民、企業人のつながりを構築し、日本社会の科学基盤の発展に寄与することを目的として「大隅基礎科学創成財団」^*2を立ち上げられました。大隅良典さんの信念を実行に移す「行動力」、私財を惜しみなく投じる「無私の精神」は、リーダーを志す者にとって偉大な指針になるものと考えました。

Award Ceremony

Since Yoshinori Ohsumi will be unable to attend the Award Ceremony to be held during the District 76 Fall Conference 2017, we visited him at the Suzukakedai Campus of the Tokyo Institute of Technology on September 26, 2017 to present the plaque to him.

授賞式

大隅良典さんは、ご多忙のため秋季大会での授賞式には参加できないため、実行委員が2017年9月26日に東京工業大学すずかけ台キャンパスで盾を授与してまいりました。

The Award Ceremony will be held during the District 76 Fall Conference 2017 on the date and time specified below:

10:00 to 10:30 a.m., Friday, November 3, 2017 (before the Japanese language contest)

 

授賞式は、2017年秋季大会において下記の日時に執り行います。

What is the Communication and Leadership Award?

The Communication and Leadership Award is the highest award presented by District 76 to non-Toastmaster individuals or groups who have made great achievements in the spheres of communication and leadership. This annual award was established in 2012, with the first winner being Dr. Donald Keene, Professor Emeritus of Columbia University and a scholar of Japanese literature. Since then it has been awarded every year to individuals who have achieved noteworthy success in their respective fields. Last year’s winner was Dr. Koichi Wakata, an astronaut who spent time at the International Space Station.

＜コミュニケーション＆リーダーシップ賞とは＞

コミュニケーション＆リーダーシップ賞は、ディストリクト76でもっとも名誉ある賞です。コミュニケーションとリーダーシップの分野で多大な貢献をされたトーストマスターズの会員でない個人または団体に贈られています。2012年に設立されて以来、コロンビア大学名誉教授・日本文学研究家ドナルド・キーン氏を第1回の受賞者として、その後毎年各界で活躍されている方達に授賞をさせていただき、昨年は宇宙飛行士の若田光一氏にこの賞をお贈りしました。
