News From District Director

Thinking back to the first time you joined a Toastmasters meeting how did you feel? Were you excited? Were you nervous? Did you have a great time? How about when you were first asked to join a Toastmasters club? Some of us were ready to join. But some others were not so sure. Some of us were wondering if we could really keep up.  Which one of those were you?

Recently, I have been talking to a lot of people about how what they think is the best way to encourage guests to join. Not every club needs to focus on this, but many do. I think one of the best suggestions was from ™  Wada. He said that “I have told guests that if you are not sure, you can feel free to quit at any time.  Just try us out. You don`t have to make a six-month commitment yet.”   Many guests are impressed with the meeting and its quality. But there are just as many that are not confident that they can keep or meet the same level as others. But by giving this kind of gentle nudge that is ok to try it and change your mind you make it easier to for the guest to say yes.

Just think that each time a guest some it a once in a lifetime opportunity to join your club.  Most likely they will not visit again if they feel uncomfortable. Can you imagine the significant loss that would be to that person? That person lost the chance to become a confident and powerful speaker. But you can change that. All you need to do is say hi, make them comfortable and make it easy for them to say “yes!” to joining your Toastmaster club.

A. Introduction of New Charter Club

In January, we have two clubs chartered.

One Astellas Toastmasters

It is a corporate-based club that started in Tokyo with 43 members.

We aim to be a club where we enjoy learning by trial and error at regular meetings, bring　what we learn into our work and have a good influence on achieving our mission “STELLA”, Synergy, Trial & Error, Long-Lasting, Achievement.

We look forward to playing our part in the Toastmaster’s community!

Nihombashi Toastmasters Club

Nihombashi Toastmasters Club has been charted in January 2020! We are a group of people with a wide range of age variety and professional backgrounds. Though our purposes and expectation may be different to join this club, we value and respect those who take their own initiatives and proactively make actions to be a better communicator and a leader. Looking for a new community where it’s fun, cheerful and you can be yourself at ease? This is the place to be, the Nihombashi Toastmasters Club! B. Prospective Clubs are evolving

In January, we had remarkable events at the organizations such as a university and a non-profit organization. The first meeting at Sophia University was held with 15 university members and 15 toastmasters. We may welcome a new toastmasters club in Sophia University in the near future. And the first meeting at JICA Tokyo, Japan International Cooperation Agency Tokyo, was held with 5 JICA employees. Plus, some people are showing their passion to establish new clubs in the prefectures where no club is now such as Akita and Yamagata. If you have any attachment in these areas, could you please support them? Looking forward to hearing from you.

C. Traditional Education Certification

As Toastmasters International announced on January 30^th, the application window for Traditional Education Certification will be closed by June 30th, 2020. No exception will be accepted. Please plan your achievements well to be certified within this term. Especially, application process for ALS is complicated. Please be noted as below.

1. For whom planning to apply with District Officer role this term, you need to apply the certification via direct email to Education Program team.
2. For whom planning to apply for HPL (LDREXC), please let me recommend you to complete your project as early as possible so that you can achieve the credit by May 31^st.
3. For whom planning to achieve Successful Club Coach, please satisfy the requirements by the end of May. You need to apply the certification via direct email to Education Program team.
4. For who have been appointed as Club Mentor, only the club mentors of the clubs chartered by December 30^th, 2019, are eligible to apply for ALS. The mentors for the clubs chartered in December need to apply the certification via direct email to Education Program team.
5. For who have been appointed as Club Sponsor, please let me recommend you to complete the charter submission by May end. Practically we need to submit the charter certification by early June, otherwise we cannot be in time for the DTM credit in the traditional education program. In June, you need to apply the certification via direct email to Education Program team.
6. For Pathways Guide/Lead, you may already have your credits and if you have not confirmed, please reach Education Program team.

D. April Due submission is coming

April Due submission opened on February 3rd. Please start collecting club membership fees from your club members as soon as you can. The point is to submit 8 membership fees as soon as possible. 8 membership will satisfy your minimum requirements for club to be good standing, which will ensure your entire club activities. Once you gathered more than 8 membership fees, please pay from Club Central promptly.
