Vol. 12 Global Expression TMC

Global Expression TMC meets in UNICEF House, right next to U.N.
Headquarters, Manhattan, New York!

As its name shows, the club members are diplomats and a variety of people from all over the world.

The club meets twice a month (2nd and 4th Tuesday, from 1:00PM to 2:00PM).
In just an hour, they usually have three prepared speeches and evaluations,
a general evaluation, and plus, three to four table topics speeches.
Remarkable time management!

Even though core members are diplomats and people working for UN,
the club membership is open to public.
A few Japanese people belong to Global Expression TMC!

To attend a meeting, you need to inform them of your attendance beforehand to be registered.

At the security gate on the first floor of UNICEF House, they give you an ID with your picture on it.

This club is modest in size, and yet, members are highly motivated and eager to learn speaking skills.

“Leadership is talking. Talking is selling your ideas!” they say.

1. At table topics session, diplomats often begin speaking with a famous quote, and end with another good quote or a saying. I find their speaking style authentic and persuasive.
I often hear quotes by Churchill, Mahatma Gandhi and JFK.

Rachael, who is a former politician in the Philippines says,” Quotes and sayings are quite powerful in public speaking. ”
I agree. I always find their speeches impressive.

I started learning quotes and sayings myself!

2. Expressions they use are so vivid. They depict the scenes in details.

“I reached my destination at night, and drove around to find a supermarket,” could be said.

But they say, for example,
“I arrived in Sausalito, the suburbs of San Francisco at 10 PM. Then,
I drove my white Toyota Camry in the dark to find a Wall Mart.”

The speech evaluator said, “Specifics stick,,, they say. I felt the description so picturesque and memorable.”

I thought so, too.

Too many details might be counterproductive, but “properly detailed descriptions” are obviously effective to make the speech impressive and impactful.

3. Practical Message with HOW

“Don’t procrastinate, do it within today!” is good.

However, they say, for example,
“Don’t procrastinate, do it now, within today!
HOW?,,,,,, Why don’t you write a diary before 8 O’clock in the evening?!
Then, you remember things undone for the day,,, and still have enough time to finish them within that day.”

I think the latter sounds even more practical and feel inspired to do so.

Plus,
TM Kazuo Noguchi, DTM, an enthusiastic Japanese toastmaster (District 46 Governor, 2013-14) is a faithful member of this club!

Whenever he speaks, the harmony is in the air.
He is gentle, kind, intelligent and efficient in speaking and evaluating.

TM Noguchi is an indispensable member of the club.
He is highly respected and admired by so many toastmasters in the eastern seaboard!

Whenever I attend, I always learn a lot of valuable things from him.

Global Expression TMC is such a dynamic, educational club with such cozy, and heartwarming members!

If you plan to visit UN headquarters, why don’t you plan your trip to “Coincide” with Global Expression’s meeting schedule?
13:00-14:00 on 2nd and 4th Tuesday, at UNICEF House, right in front of the U.N. Headquarters.
